The Siegel High School Band has a nationally recognized marching band, three concert bands, jazz band, as well as active percussion ensembles and color guard programs. The band has approximately 130 members and has traveled to New York City, Indianapolis, Disney World, Universal Studios, the Bahamas, and many other venues throughout its history.

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

Marching Band
The Siegel High School Marching Band is the school's premier outdoor performance ensemble. Students in the marching rehearse after school perfecting their show to be performed at football halftime and marching contests across the region. The marching band has seen success performing in Bands of America Regionals, and the Contest of Champions hosted at MTSU. Students in the marching band have gone on to audition and perform in professional Drum Corps International ensembles.

Winter Guard
The Siegel High School Winter Guard is an auditioned group comprising of members of the Color Guard. The Winter Guard rehearses from December-April and performs at contests all across the Middle Tennessee area.

Percussion Ensemble
The Siegel High School Percussion Ensemble is a flexible group of students acting both as the percussion section of Siegel's other bands, as well as an independent concert percussion ensemble and class. They perform many times throughout the year both off campus and on. This ensemble is recognized by the Percussive Arts Society, and is led by Kyle Ramsay.

Jazz Band
The Siegel High School Jazz Band is an extracurricular group that meets after school December-May. In jazz band, students explore a wide varied of commercial music styles as well as improvisation techniques. The band has played at multiple events including the Murfreesboro BBQ Festival, Jazz Festival, and Siegel Night of Jazz and Percussion.

Wind Ensemble
The Siegel High School Wind Ensemble is the premier instrumental ensemble of the school. Placement into the group is made through audition, and students perform multiple concerts throughout the year. This ensemble regularly plays at Concert Performance Assessment, garnering Superior Ratings and other accolades. Students in wind ensemble audition for placement in Midstate and Allstate ensembles, and participate in many other Honor Band Experiences.

Symphonic Band
The Siegel High School Symphonic Band is the school's non auditioned ensemble made up of 10th-12th Graders. In Symphonic Band, students hone their technique on their primary and secondary instruments as they prepare for concerts. The Symphonic Band regularly performs at Concert Performance earning Consistent Superior Ratings. Students are encouraged to audition for Midstate, and participate in other Honor Band experiences.

Concert Band
The Siegel High School Concert Band is the school's entry level ensemble made up of 9th Graders. In Concert Band, students hone their technique on their primary instruments as they prepare for their semester concerts. Students are encouraged to audition for Midstate, and participate in other Honor Band experiences.

Pep Band
The Siegel High School Pep Band is the school's spirit ensemble that plays at basketball games. Every student in the organization contributes to the pep band to provide a high energy environment during the basketball season.

Chamber Ensembles
Chamber Ensembles are student run groups that include a smaller number of musicians. Students in Wind Ensemble perform in at least one chamber ensemble throughout the year. Chamber groups at Siegel have auditioned for festivals and have gotten to perform at the TMEA conference.

MEET THE TEAM
BAND DIRECTORS

Katiana Nicholson
Band Director
Katiana "Katie" Nicholson is the Director of Bands at Siegel High School, her Alma Mater from which she graduated in 2013. She is entering her seventh year as a high school band director.
Ms. Nicholson graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a B.M. in Music Education. She was heavily involved in the University Honors College as a Buchanan Scholar, comprising the top 20 students of each year's graduating class. She received the President's Award, the highest honor an undergraduate can receive at the university.
Outside of teaching, Ms. Nicholson is the Assistant Principal Clarinetist of the Nashville African American Wind Symphony (NAAWS), and has performance experience with Music City Drum Corps and Rhythm X Indoor Winds.
Ms. Nicholson is a member of the National Association of Music Educators, Tennessee Bandmasters Association, and MTSBOA.

Nathan Mohnke
Band Director
Nathan Mohnke is the Assistant Band Director at Siegel High School. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Trombone Performance from Belmont University, class of 2022. During his time at Belmont, he performed with the university’s Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Jazz Band I, and Chamber Brass Ensemble. He also served as the Education Coordinator for Belmont’s United Sound program, which provides musical opportunities for students with disabilities. In 2019, he marched with the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps, earning a silver medal with the corps.
In addition to teaching, Mr. Mohnke is an active performer with the Lakes Brass Quintet, which regularly performs locally and engages a broad audience through social media, where their content has garnered thousands of followers.
Mr. Mohnke is a member of the National Association of Music Educators, Phi Mu Alpha, Tennessee Bandmasters Association, and MTSBOA.

Corey Miller
Colorguard Director
Corey Miller is the Color Guard Director for the Siegel High School Band. He has been involved in colorguard since 2015 and began teaching the activity in 2017. He started his instructional career at Columbia Academy and spent the past seven years working with Columbia Central High School. Corey also marched two seasons in Independent World Class with Eklipse Winterguard.
Colorguard is more than just an activity for Corey—it’s a deep passion and a defining part of his life. It’s where he has built community, formed lifelong friendships, and grown both as a performer and educator. His goal is to ensure every student feels welcomed, heard, and inspired to be part of such a creative and expressive art form.
Corey believes that teamwork is essential to a successful program. He strives to create an environment where students leave rehearsals feeling happy, accomplished, and eager to return.

Kyle Ramsay
Percussion Director
Kyle Ramsay is the Percussion Director for the Siegel High School Band, his Alma Mater from which he graduated in 2016. He is entering his sixth year there working with their marching band, concert bands, and percussion ensembles.
Mr. Ramsay graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a B.S. in Music Industry and a minor in Audio Production. There, he studied classical percussion, jazz piano, Middle-Eastern hand drumming, composition, and music pedagogy under notable faculty, including: Lalo Davila, Brian Mueller, Matt Endahl, and Russell Wharton.
Since 2016, Mr. Ramsay has worked with numerous schools and ensembles in Middle Tennessee, including McGavock HS, Oakland HS, Audio Theater Indoor Drumline, Music City Mystique, and Music City Drum Corps.
Mr. Ramsay is an Innovative Percussion Educational Artist.

To achieve this year-after-year, we invest in a dedicated team of additional staff members who are passionate about music and education. These instrumental specialists work tirelessly during the marching band season to enhance our students' experience, providing mentorship, accountability, and support.
